Grocery Shopping

The other day I was at the grocery store, stocking up on foodstuffs for the week and chicken legs and thighs were on sale for $.79/lb. Great! So I added a tray of each to my basket and merrily continued on my shopping extravaganza.
I got to the checkout and the checker starts ringing my stuff up, and we get to the chicken and she starts entering the prices in (why she didn’t just scan it, I don’t know). One was 3something and the other was $4.01. I’m watching the handy dandy screen and watch in confusion as a line item named “1 Gal Water” pops up. Now, I am not one of those people who snobbishly turns their noses up at tap water and concerns themselves with purchasing their water in giant plastic jugs, so this concerned me and I brought it to her attention. Apparently she had entered “4-0-1-Code” instead of “4-0-1-Meat” or some such confusion. So she meant to charge me for the meat, but the difference in the button made it a $.29 jug of water. She removed the $.29 offense and charged me the $4.01, my groceries were bagged and I left.
Now, as this is going on, a sign catches my eye at the checkout counter. It reads, “We’re committed to accuracy. If your purchase rings up for more than amount on the shelf, we’ll give it to you FREE!” Apparently being honest just costs more.

    I’d honestly like to know if anyone has -ever- gotten anything for free that didn’t ring up at the right price. Anytime it’s ever happened to me or I’ve witnessed it happen to someone else, there’s some excuse for why it’s happened (must be a computer glitch, therefore they’re not responsible), or someone has to go TO the shelf to see if it should’ve rung up at $0.59 vs. $0.65. At that point, I’d rather just give them the 6 cents than wait for someone to go back and check, and then try to come up with an argument.
    Also, I wish they’d give it to you for free if the price -wasn’t marked at all- on the shelf. I find that sometimes when I buy odd stuff, I just have to take my chances on what it’s going to cost when I finally get to the checkstand.
    Also, nine times out of ten, you don’t even catch that it’s rung up at the wrong price until you’re already out of the store and on your way home.
    This is why grocery shopping is my #2 least favorite thing to do in the whole world.

    Usually this place is really good. If I tell them it was $1.49 on the shelf instead of $2.89, they’ll usually just give it to me for $1.49 instead of sending someone back. That’s why I always try and get a checker I recognize that’s been around a while. They’re usually nicer :)
    And I agree with you – if it’s wrong and the policy is such that you’re supposed to get it for free, then give it for free. A “computer glitch” doesn’t make it ok to charge people the wrong price. I agree with the price-less stuff, too. BAH!

    I don’t buy anything that doesn’t have a price posted. They obviously don’t want my business. As far as workers being less than stellar…well, that’s the way it is everywhere. :( I hate people. GRRR! :)

    That’s the time when you clear your throat loudly and point at the sign, and moan and bitch until they either give you the free food, or bring over a manager, and if the customers in line behind you start giving you the evil eye, you tell them that you’re standing up for your civil liberties, and if they don’t like it they can find another line while the manager tries to squirm out of their posted policy like a greased weasel. Yes.
    On the other hand, I’m mighty impressed by how the Aldi’s checkout people seem to have memorized the price of every single item in the store. I wonder if, when they look in their pantry at home, they see “79 cents” instead of “chili beans” in their minds.
    A friend and I were talking yesterday about how sad we were that small, local businesses (in this case, small cafes) were being driven out by large, corporate entities (ie Starbucks). I wonder if there’s a way to reverse the trend, where people will value community over speed and convenience.
