Quilt On

This year my mom and I joined a “Block of the Month” club at her local quilt store. For $5, we each signed up and got the first month’s fabric and pattern. Every month, she sends me the fabric for the upcoming month and I mail her back my completed block. She takes the completed blocks to the store and trades them in for new fabric. So theoretically, one could end up with an entire quilt top for $5 in materials. I’ve been scanning mine as I go along and am awaiting the fourth installment of fabric bits.
I also took a hand applique class today and am busy sewing bits of fabric and paper together. It’s a tightrope walk between interesting and tedious. So far I’ve got most of it basted and then I get to tack down all the pieces. I have no idea what I’m going to do with this, as I’m not really interested in the pattern itself, but it was a good teaching aid to get all the different types of stitches and potential hazards hammered out before being out on my own. I broke down and decided to learn how to applique because of this quilt. I liked it, but not $200 worth for those colors. I realize quilting such a beast will run me more than $200 in the end, but it’s the process, right? RIGHT? I figured a class was a good idea before tackling a quilt sized project of my own was a Good Idea. It’s a good thing I’m liking this so far.

I don’t get it. She trades in the completed blocks? What becomes of them then? I’m confoozled!
The blocks so far look lovely. I must learn to quilt!

Well, she doesn’t give them to the shop, she just shows them that they’ve been completed. And then she gets the next month of goodies. If you don’t finish your block or take it in, you gotta pay $5 for the materials for the month.

Trina, what store? Interesting idea. Didn’t know that you could do that.

I’ve seen a bunch of different stores do this promotion. It’s a sure-fire way to get you in the store on a monthly basis, so even if they’re handing out free fabric scraps they’re likely to make money on the deal. I’m on to them, though!
The particular store she’s going to is Cozy Cottage in Brea.
